‘Implications considered’

THE Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) says economic implications were considered before imposing carbon levies, and nitrogen synthetic fertiliser and green fees.Managing director Ruel Yamuna told The National on Friday that following consultations with relevant stakeholders last year, a least cost option was taken to impose those levies using provisions under section 71a of the Public Finance Management Act (Amended) 2016 (PFMA). He said the fees were aimed at implementing climate adaptation and mitigation activities and projects.“We see this as an important step to understanding how much we can generate domestically to help us roll out some of the climate change activities and projects,” he said.“We cannot continue to wait for the international community to come in and help us.“We need to mobilise funding domestically and that’s what we are doing.“It will be the first dedicated funding source that will help us carry out all the different activities, projects and even the commitments that we’ve signed up for.”
