INCREASED employment opportunities in the National Capital District (NCD) will improve the law and order situation in the capital city, according to the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Chamber president Rio Fiocco said the biggest concern of businesses in the city was law and order.
Fiocco said businesses wanted to work with City Hall to address their concerns.
“We have had a good collaboration in the past with NCD and we are looking forward to continuing that partnership,” Fiocco told The National.
“The governor’s office is always open to concerns from businesses in the city. We are looking forward to continue to improve the law and order situation which will lead to increased employment, particularly of the youths that are unfortunately marginalised and committing crimes because they are not employed.
“There are a lot of things that needs improving but first and foremost, every businesses are being affected by law and order, particularly if you consider the videos that we all saw of the election-related violence in our capital and other centres.”
He said chamber members were also concerned about the frequent power cuts and water shortages which were rare when Eda Ranu was running the water supply.
They also want more police visibility in the city.
“We have had discussions with the Metropolitan Superintendent and NCD and our members would like to see an increase in the number of policemen in the city, as well as training for the police,”he said.
“We are hoping that the Internal Security Minister will be able to convince the treasurer to allocate more money to have more police recruits next year and they can be properly trained.”
