Incubation centres vital: Official

THE incubation centre is an important concept in supporting the Government’s small and medium enterprise (SME) policy, an official says.
Small Medium Enterprise Corporation (SMEC) chairman Michael Mell said the Government should commend existing incubation centres such as the Pacifika Women’s Network trade centre at Waigani in Port Moresby and others.
“Those incubation centres are also SMEs, providing that space for other SMEs to make money,” he said.
“They are like partners to the Government.
“We need to look at the business principles.
“Every business is established to make money.
“I want to commend and congratulate those Papua New Guineans who are taking that initiative to create incubation centres where SMEs can at least start off or expand their business.
“SME is a priority policy under the Government.
“So given that policy, the incubation centre is an important concept that we should develop and start to establish.”
Mell said key organisations to take charge in this was the SMEC, which was the Government’s agency to drive its SME policy.
He said plans were in place for SMEC to work with relevant government bodies to establish incubation centres in the provinces.
