CHINA’s President Xi Jinping handed over the K40 million Independence Boulevard to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill on Friday, saying it came with the best wishes of the people of China.
O’Neill said the China-PNG relationship had grown.
“Ours is a strong and growing relationship that began in 1976. We value the strong support that the Chinese government continues to give to PNG in its endeavour to grow and develop our country,” he said.
Xi said China had done “its modest best” to provide help and support organisations of the Apec meeting.
“It is token of the Chinese people’s best wishes for the people of PNG. Also completed is the express way linking Jackson International Airport and the Central Business District. Both projects had been built with Chinese government’s assistance.
“I’m sure the Independence Boulevard will become a landmark and contribute to the ease of travel and economic prosperity of the local people.”
The Chinese-funded boulevard will be used during normal days, but closed during big events such as Remembrance Day and Independence Day celebrations.
