FORTY-seven low-risk inmates from Bomana will be engaged in a rehabilitation programme through a partnership between the National Capital District Commission and Correctional Services.
NCDC city manager Bernard Kipit said the programme meant rehabilitation through positive community engagements, particularly cleaning the city.
Kipit said the partnership with CS would help promote their work, particularly in trying to rehabilitate prisoners.
“NCDC had always supported CS with its programmes,” he said.
He encouraged other organisations to partner with NCDC to keep Port Moresby clean and safe for everyone.
“It is important that we support CS because prisoners need to be rehabilitated and we can support by opening up opportunities for the prisoners.
“The prisoners can also be used to do awareness in terms of driving the message of keeping the city clean.”
The 47 inmates, 12 of whom were females, passed medical examinations and were fit to participate in the programme that was to start today at Gordon.
The programme will run for two months in the main areas of the city on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Officer in-charge of the prison’s female division Senior Insp Agnes Kunjil said: “This is a very good initiative between NCDC and CS.”
