SEVEN prisoners under the supervision of warders have been involved in the construction of a new building for the Correctional Services in New Ireland.

Under the supervision of prison officers, they began the construction in March, according to Cpl Walter Sagari.

Kaut, situated outside Kavieng town, will be the site for the new provincial prison.

The prisoners constructed the building to house tools, rations and a generator set.

One of the prison officers said they started by letting the prisoners begin from cutting and then storing timber before laying the foundation and lastly the construction.

“I think this is a very good initiative, not only to rehabilitate them,” he said.

Kaut has one 40-man dormitory for detainees and three houses for correctional officers.
