POST Papua New Guinea’s pilot project initiative to use electric vehicles (EVs) to offset the high cost of fuel and address climate change has received support from the head of one of the country’s main fossil fuel suppliers.
Puma Energy country manager Hulala Tokome told The National it was “a fantastic initiative” that the national postal service had embarked on.
“Well done to Post PNG for taking that bold step to combat climate change,” he said.
“It is a global issue. I think we need to support those kinds of initiatives rather than not supporting it because it involves all of us.”
Tokome also said electric vehicles would have an impact on the fossil fuel business.
He said the demand for action against climate change has influenced prompted the rise in electric car production globally.
According to statics from this year’s EV Volumes and Global EV Outlook, more than 3.2 million plug-in vehicles were registered worldwide this year, while the projected market for the EV is set to reach US$384 billion (about K1.4 trillion) by year’s end.
Meanwhile, Post PNG operations manager Ben Davies said electric vehicles and driver-less cars were the future, and the organisation aimed to continue to align with innovation and use emerging technology to reduce costs.
