Invest in children’s education, says MP
The National, Tuesday 26th March 2013
INVESTING in the education of children is the greatest resource parents invest in, acting Education Minister James Marape says.
He told people during the launching of the Nimamar local level government franchise university centre on Lihir Island, New Ireland, that the onus for development of education was in the hands of local level governments who the national government was ready to partner with.
Marape called on people to take ownership of such investments saying it had attracted interest in PNG as a shining example of what governments, as custodians of the people, could do for the long term benefit of citizens through development of educational opportunities.
LLG president Rudolph Tongop said the opening of the centre marked a milestone in the history of Lihir and its citizens as it unveiled the vision of the Tumbawinlam assembly to enable their students to scale the heights of learning.
Tongop said the opening of the university centre was the culmination of their conviction and successful partnership with multiple universities to bridge their students with open campus learning.
He said this was what Lihir children needed and he expected that they would see an influx of other students attending the centre.
Director of open and distance learning at the University of Technology Wilson Tovirika commended the people for collaborating with the university.
“It shows they are concerned about developments taking place around the country and that the only way they can contribute meaning fully is through education,” he said.
