PARENTS at the Nimamar local level government on Lihir Island, New Ireland have been told to invest in the education of their children.

Speaking before the launching of the Nimamar LLG Franchise University Centre, acting Education Minister James Marape told the people that their children were the greatest resource they could invest in.

He said education development was in the hands of local level governments which the national government was ready to partner with.

Nimamar LLG president Rudolf Tongop said the opening of the centre was important for Lihir as it was the plan of the Tumbawinlam Assembly to help students to scale the heights of learning.

He told the people that he expected an influx of students from outside Lihir accessing the new centre.

Director of the department of open and distance learning at the University of Technology Wilson Tovirika said the people were concerned about development taking place around the country and the only way they could contribute meaningfully was through

education.

“Knowledge is a necessary tool for development, hence it is imperative that we must have well educated young people to take the country to the next level of development into the future,” he said.
