Investigate prison breaks

Letters

THE break out by inmates in correctional service (CS) institutions are uncalled for and needs investigating.
The cumulative figure of hardcore criminals on the run is not safe to the public and it seems there is breakdown in control.
The recent break out at Buimo jail in Morobe led to the killing of a prison officer and this week eight on remand were killed Baisu Jail in Mt Hagen while trying to escape.
Correctional institutions is very important for rehabilitating convicted prisoners and holding those waiting for their verdicts from the courts.
Some of the inmates are locked up for committing serious crimes from murder, rape, armed robbery to misappropriation of public funds and are expected to complete their terms prior to being released.
Investigations may establish and find necessary solutions to recommend for the Government.
It is also imperative that inmates are in prison on their own doings and prison officers should not take responsibilities for such break outs.
Inmates should serve out their terms and not plan escapes.

  • The verdicts take forever to be reached and people are left in prison for months.
We are talking about peoples lives not trade goods!
The courts need to step up and close cases. This may be the very reason why these prison breaks are happening. We cannot just blame the prisoners, blame the system. Too many lazy people handling cases.
