Investigation management training for CID officers

MORE than 15 criminal investigation officers throughout the country will attend a seven-week training on different aspects of investigation management in Port Moresby.
Crime Investigation Division (CID) director Mark Yangen said the training would be conducted by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to enhance their knowledge on current PNG legislations, police investigative policies, procedures and practices.
“There has been no training for the past 17 to 20 years with division officers,” he said.
“When a serious crime is committed, young officers take the matter to the CID officer in charge but the officer in charge doesn’t have the proper knowledge to assist.
“That is the main problem now that all the officers are facing.”
Yangen said the core function of the CID was to arrest, investigate and charge criminals but many have failed how to follow the processes because they have no knowledge and skills.
“Many cases being thrown out of court houses, criminals are free out there causing the same crime again because we lack the do what we were mandated to do,” he said.
“CID officers in charge training will equip them with investigation management processes to go back and train their young officers.”
Police training has not been held for many years and it was a partnership agreement between AFP to develop detective training programme to assist the area of investigation in the country, assistance AFP mission commander Bruce Charles said.
