Investigations are underway in New Ireland into allegations of electoral fraud and corrupt practice in the 2012 general election.

The investigations are being done by the Investigation Sweep Team which was established by the provincial executive council (PEC) in Aug 2012 to probe allegations of election-related malpractices.

In December last year, the PEC reinforced and finalised the establishment of the sweep team with terms of reference to carry out its tasks.

Governor Sir Julius Chan said, among other things, early election campaign bribery, feasting, accommodation, transport hire and handouts of goods to lure votes would all be investigated.

Sir Julius said this was a bold step undertaken with the full support of the PEC to ensure open, fair, peaceful and safe voting environment.

He added that this was a measure to restore his people’s confidence in the democratic electoral process.

“Its purpose is to identify and investigate issues of corruption and breaches of electoral laws encountered during the 2012 election,” he said.

“The investigations will be covering certain aspects of the financial investigations into the provincial government in the RAMs Business Consultants Report, which exposed an unaccounted K64 million by the provincial government between 2002 and 2007.”

Sir Julius urged his people to assist with information relating to corruption or illegal practice committed by any member of his government, any candidate,  supporter or individual.

He said the allegations would be fully investigated, assessed and recommended actions made.
