EDUCATION

A WAVE of excitement swept across Gulf’s Iokea village as the pioneer class in early childhood education prepared for graduation on Tuesday, Dec 19.
The day marked yet another pivotal moment in the journey of education in the Iokea community. Under the visionary leadership of the Marape-Rosso government, we witnessed the significant reform in primary education with the strategic focus in phasing out elementary education starting in 2024. The shift is a vital component of the National Education Policy 2020-2029.  And it is up to every stakeholder to make this happen.
In the heart of the serene Iokea village, where tradition meets the promise of a brighter future, an air of anticipation swept through the community. The source of this profound excitement was none other than the upcoming graduation of pioneer students from Iokea Lighthouse, a transformative pilot project for early childhood education in Kerema district. The event was set for Tuesday, Dec 19, 2023.
Launched just five months ago, this groundbreaking initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between the Kerema District Development Authority and Lighthouse Christian Academy. The project, spearheaded by the unwavering vision of local MP Thomas Opa. It is poised to leave an indelible mark on the landscape of education in Kerema district and ultimately the Gulf Province.

A vision unfolds
The journey began with the resounding cheers of parents and community leaders as representatives from the education sector in Kerema and the province, including the Gulf administration, witnessed the launch of the Kerema District Early Childhood Education Pilot Project. It was a momentous occasion that echoed the commitment to education as the catalyst for the district’s development. At the forefront of this educational revolution is Mrs Siminji, the principal of Lighthouse Christian Academy. Her dedication to the cause has been unwavering, leading a team of pioneer teachers who have made significant sacrifices to lay the foundation for the success of the project.
“The sacrifices we make today will pave the way for a brighter tomorrow,” remarked Siminji, whose leadership has been instrumental in navigating the challenges and triumphs of the programme. She was ably supported by Mr and Mrs Ovasuru from Iokea.

Community Support
Beyond the classroom, the success of the initiative would not have been possible without the unyielding support of parents and the broader community. Iokea village has become a symbol of collective determination to provide quality education for its children, breaking barriers and nurturing a generation of forward-thinkers and our leaders of tomorrow.
As the pioneer students prepared to graduate, the significance of the day could not be overstated. Their achievements not only restored pride in education but also provide hope for a future where every child in Kerema has access to quality early childhood education.
“The success of these students is a testament to the transformative power of education,” says MP Opa, who sees this milestone as a catalyst for the broader advancement of Early Childhood Education in the district.

Charting the way forward
Backed by the permitted status sertificate from the Department of Education, Lighthouse Christian Academy is poised for expansion. The mission to “educate minds, change hearts, and transform lives for a better PNG” is not just a slogan but a guiding principle that will drive the partnership’s expansion throughout the district and province.
As Iokea village geared up to celebrate its pioneer graduates, the ripple effects of this transformative education initiative are expected to resonate far beyond, charting the way forward for a future where every child in Kerema can thrive through quality education and reclaim their places in higher education nationwide and globally.
