A MEMBER of Parliament accused of reckless driving causing damage to state property was convicted, cautioned and discharged by a court yesterday.
Magistrate Hubert Sareke made the ruling on the case of Member for Wewak, Kevin Isifu, 47, who was charged with reckless driving resulting in an accident causing damage to a light pole along Poreporena Freeway, Port Moresby.
It was alleged that Isifu was driving a vehicle at a high speed down Poreporena Highway on the night of June 22, at 11:30pm, when he lost control of the car and hit two flower beds before turning over and hitting a light pole.
No one was injured; Isifu received minor injuries while the vehicle was extensively damaged.
Isifu admitted his mistake and apologised in court for driving recklessly which could have endangered other lives including his own.
Police prosecutor Austin Dasiga asked the court for a suspended sentence as Isifu was a first time offender, a person of standing in the community and had apologised to the court for his action.
He further asked for Isifu to be placed on a three-month good behaviour bond with surety of K300.
Sareke warned Isifu not to repeat the offence and made orders for him to be discharged.
