Isou surprise Wigmen

THE PRK Gulf Isou upset the Kroton Hela Wigmen 22-18 at the National Football Stadium to clinch their third win of the season.
After a bright start with wins over the Enga Mioks (34-16) and Goroka Lahanis (12-10), the Gulf side were thrashed by the Agmark Gurias (42-8) and dropped last week’s fixture in Minj 28-12 to the Waghi tumbe but made amends in their Round 5 meeting with the Helas.
The Wigmen were first on the board through winger Gilmore Paul but rugged back-rower Benji Kot, who scored a brace, got his side level with a bullocking effort in the 14th minute.
The Wigmen responded and led 10-6 until Isou fullback Josh Eriko stole a try by taking a quick tap from a penalty on his 40m line and dashing to the line catching the Wigmen off guard.
The Isou took a 12-10 lead into the break and then centre Smith Siviri grabbed an intercept to extend the lead to 18-10.
The game was punctuated by referee James Kundi’s sin-binning of Hela centre Stanford Talita and Gulf prop Nelson Wak for fighting.
Hela centre Spiro Thomas sliced through out wide for a try to get his side to within four of the lead.
But Kot crashed over for his second try in the 66th minute for a 22-14 lead.
The Wigmen managed a late try but the Gulf isde had done enough to claim the two competition points.
