Issuance of land titles not fair to taxpayers

Letters

THE  story in The National ‘Squatters secure land’ on Tuesday is a great concern to me as a taxpayer.
Our good MPs are giving out free land titles while taxpayers have to wait donkey years to get one.
Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko said these people were displaced after their homes were demolished to make way for development at Paga Hill.
Were they squatters at Paga Hill at that time?
Did they ever have a valid land title when they lived there?
The trend here is that if you want a free land title, just squatter on State land or someone else’s piece of land just so you get evicted and by the saving grace of the good MPs in the National Capital District (NCD), you will be given a free land title on another piece of land.
Meanwhile, some of us have to pay yearly land rates to the Lands Department, land rates to NCD Commission, while these squatters are getting free land titles.
The commission’s policy of turning settlements into suburbs is nothing but a political gimmick to win votes in the next election.
At the end of the day, it is the taxpayers who are working hard while our MPs are happy to bend over backwards to look after the squatters.
