THE Isuzu National Cup is seen as an opportunity for young players to work their way into the national men’s squad for this year’s T20 World Cup, says an official. Following the launch of the 50-over competition, Cricket Papua New Guinea (CPNG) selections head David Bishop told The National that the current Barramundis squad were made up of contracted players. However, he said there were a few spots remaining for additional players. “Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, we need an extended World Cup squad, so this competition is a perfect opportunity for young players to push for selection into the Barramundis,” Bishop said. “We will be using this competition for selections.” Bishop said the national men’s team had not played for more than a year. He said the competition was important for them to regain match fitness. “The year of 2019 was a milestone for the Barramundis as they qualified for the World Cup,” Bishop said. “It’s also important for upcoming players to stake their claim and be part of the touring squad.“There will be a lot of spots available for Papua New Guineans who want to step up.”
