THE increased use of the social media and other information and communication technology platforms by people to engage in criminal activity must be addressed with the use of the appropriate law.

Cabinet endorsed the PNG Cybercrime Policy in July 2014 and gave the go ahead to the Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jimmy Miringtoro, through the Department of Communication and Information and the National Information and Communications Technology Authority, to develop the flow-on cybercrime legislation for passage by Parliament.

NICTA’s legal services headed the group tasked to develop the cybercrime legislation. The legislation was to be tabled during this session of Parliament.

Surely, an explanation is warranted on why this is so and when the legislation can be tabled on the floor Parliament and made into law.

Minister Miringtoro would be best advised to kick the backsides of those responsible to make the long overdue cyb rcrime legislation become a reality.
