JACKS of PNG has launched its third local design brand the Chauka Ya label to support local Papua New Guinean designers.
Chauka Ya is a garment and accessory label by Cynthia Kewei that produces clothing with a strong connection to her island home province of Manus.
Kewei’s husband Lewis West, her cousin Neill Daniels and families along with Kewei’s former colleagues from Bank South Pacific Financial Group Ltd Robin Fleming and Nuni Kulu attended the launch in Jacks of PNG’s shop in Central Waigani, Port Moresby, yesterday.
Kewei, who is in Brisbane, was unable to be at the launch but was amply represented by husband West and cousin Daniels.
Boxes of facemasks and hand sanitisers were donated to the Port Moresby General Hospital and with donations for Lorengau General Hospital set for a later date.
Daniels said as part of the partnership, 50 per cent of sales royalty would go towards supporting rural community initiatives in Manus and around the country.
“The cheeky, loud and persistent Chauka bird (which appears on the Manus flag and emblem) has a strong persona instilled in the brand’s mission to create refreshing, entertaining designs for ladies, men, and the youth of today,” Daniels said.
“Chauka Ya is not just about getting people’s attention, but it’s about creating that persona in the label and wearing it loud and proud.
“Chauka Ya wants our customers’ attention, but in the fashion business you’re constantly competing with others to get or find that next look.”
