Jail denies reports of water issues

THE Buiebi Correctional Service in Southern Highlands does not have a water problem as reported by an officer in the media this week, the jail commander says.
Commander Senior Inspector Bob Omba, who is away on a 10-day compensatory leave, said the International Committee of the Red Cross was helping the institution fix its damaged water pump.
Omba said the officer’s report was misleading and blasted him over the information released without approval from his superiors.
“The total number of inmates, both convicts and remandees, at the prison is 84 and not 168 as claimed,” Omba said. “Before I left Joe Kuglame was appointed the acting commander.”
Omba said he believed and hoped that there would be no problem in relation to water supply and concern raised for the inmates to be transferred elsewhere would not happen.
He said the prison was extensively damaged in the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in February and was slowly being rebuilt.
“The prison received food rations, aid and clothes and ICRC is now rebuilding the water pump station that was damaged in the earthquake.”
