A JOINT Australian-PNG police squad detained six Papua New Guineans in Mabudawan, Western, and Port Moresby over the past couple of weeks on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and illegal entry.
Two of them were Australian citizens.
Deputy police commissioner, special operations, Donald Yamasombi said joint police provided information that five suspects were arrested in Mabudawan on various dates, and one was arrested in Port Moresby on Friday.
“It was reported that the three persons who were detained in Mabudawan on Nov 21 for alleged possession of meth, showed up in court last week,” Yamasombi explained.
“After entering guilty pleas, two were found guilty of having in their possession meth and given eight years each in prison by the Daru District Court.”
Yamasombi said two entered not-guilty pleas to an illegal-entry charge, while one entered a guilty plea and was jailed eight years.
“The other two, who entered not guilty pleas, will reappear in court on Dec 6 with the other two who were detained and charged on Nov 29 for allegedly having meth in their possession.
“The suspect, who was detained after being arrested and charged on Dec 1 in Port Moresby, appeared in court yesterday, charged with possession and trafficking meth.”
The matter was adjourned to Dec 18 to be transferred to the Daru District Court.
Yamasombi expressed gratitude to the team for their dedicated efforts in arresting the suspects.
The two found guilty would be transferred to Bomana prison.
“Despite having few resources, law enforcement officials and other organisations like Customs are guarding the border and detaining those engaged in illicit activity,” Yamasombi said.
