JAPAN recognises PNG as an important trade partner exporting large amounts of liquefied natural gas and fisheries resources, Japanese ambassador Nakahara Kuniyuki says.
He hosted local dignitaries at the 60th birthday anniversary of the Emperor of Japan at the embassy last Thursday.
Kuniyuki said he would work hard to strengthen the relations between the two nations in trade, investment, development cooperation, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
“I am delighted to host this special event as it is the emperor’s first birthday that is celebrated in his official capacity as emperor,” he said.
“I understand that a number of major Japan-funded projects, including the Port Moresby sewerage system upgrading project, were already completed in my predecessor’s term or are still in progress including the Ramu transmission system reinforcement project and the Nadzab Airport redevelopment project.
“With your cooperation, I anticipate to see significant progress made with these projects or may be even their completion before my term in PNG is up.”
Minister for Civil Aviation Lekwa Gure said PNG welcomed all countries which had established embassies and high commissions in the country.
“In order for PNG to achieve its desired development outcomes, we are asking all our partners to work corroboratively with the PNG Government through meaningful dialogue and greater consultation.
“The Government must be given the opportunity to dictate where development funds can be used.”
