Jiwaka leaders raise concerns over law, order

A BUSINESSMAN in Jiwaka had a narrow escape on Saturday night when he was shot at by armed men.
They missed his head by inches.
The incident was related to a brawl last Wednesday night after game one of the State of Origin series.
Community leaders in Banz are raising concerns over the incident, alleging that law and order issues are rife in Jiwaka.
They are calling on law enforcement agencies such as police and the courts to take serious action against those involved.
Leaders said the suspects were known.
Leaders Tony Ulupa and Wandil Ondiye claimed there were few people from Banz who were going around causing such crimes.
Ondiye said about 12 people were involved and they were known to the leaders.
He appealed to them to surrender to police.
Ondiye said the attack had affected the operation of the Hideaway Lodge and the nearby service station for a week.
Jiwaka acting police commander Michael Kapal confirmed the incident and said formal arrest would be made.
He said they had arranged for peace talks between the parties involved at the Banz police station.
Kapal said he has requested for assistance from the police mobile squad from Mt Hagen.
