PILOT school of the Pacific in Union programme St Josephs International Catholic College launched its rugby festival yesterday at the school’s Peace theatre.

The school’s head of sport John Agovai said the event, which would involve students from lower primary to the upper secondary, would be held at the Sir John Guise Stadium on Saturday.

Agovai said that the students themselves used their initiatives to get sponsors for their uniforms which were a classic example of true leadership.

“We are thankful to those parents and sponsors that have helped. It shows how committed and devoted they are towards their children’s participation in school activities,” Agovai said.

The students will play in three categories; the green level which involves 6-9 year olds, the blue level, 10-12 year olds and the gold level involving 13-16 year olds.

From this one-day rugby festival, finals teams will be selected for the NCDC School Rugby Competition.

With the full support of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union, the Pacific in Union programme under leadership of in-country manager Paul Joseph and regional development officer Douglas Guise, the programme had been introduced to 10 new schools in the capital.

The schools include the Ela Murray International, Ted Diro Primary, Gerehu Primary, Kopkop College, Taurama Primary, Gordons International, Gerehu Secondary, Badihagwa Secondary and Kila Kila Secondary.

They join the five pilot schools St Josephs, Port Moresby Grammar, Port Moresby International, Korobosea International and Salvation Army (Boroko Primary) to compete in the school rugby competition.
