EVEN a final-hole disaster could not stop Damien Jordan from an emphatic victory at this year’s Morobe Open yesterday at the Lae Golf Course.

Jordan withheld the early challengers over the opening nine holes, holding a four-shot lead heading to the 18th hole.

A double-bogey 7 was not the ideal way to seal the win, though his final round 70 would be good enough for a 17-under par total and a two-shot win over Simon Houston.

This is the biggest win of Jordan’s career so far and will no doubt boost his confidence heading into the South Pacific Export Radler PNG Open this weekend at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club.  “It is a real honour to win here in Lae as this tournament not only has a big impact for the Lae Golf Club and community, but  for Papua New Guinea,” Jordan said.

“The week for me has really come down to the putter.

“Being able to make clutch putts in each of my rounds when it mattered most was certainly the difference, especially over the opening nine holes today.

“It’s great to get the win under my belt and really can’t wait to get to Moresby to try and do the double.”

Jordan was challenged early by Josh Cabban and Houston, though unfortunately their challenge was short-lived, as Jordan remained steady throughout yesterday’s final round.  “Damien played great all week and unfortunately for the field, it wasn’t until his final hole that he made a mistake,” Houston said.

“These two weeks are so much more than just golf tournaments, it is a great opportunity for the 46 professionals to give back to the population of Lae and promote the game that we all love.

“This is a big reason so many of us return each year and I am really looking forward to returning for many years to come.”

The professionals now head to Port Moresby for the PNG Open. Cabban will return as the defending champion, for what is to be played as a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament.
