Judge Cannings to serve for another 3yrs

JUCTICE David Cannings was reappointed yesterday for another three years as a judge of the National and Supreme Courts.
Also with him was Justice Paul Tusais, who was permanently appointed to the bench for 10 years.
Registrar of the National and Supreme Courts Ian Augerea was also reappointed for another three years.
The three were sworn in by Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae at Government House, witnessed by family and staff of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission.
At the ceremony, the three recited, before the governor-general, the declaration of office, loyalty and the judicial declaration.
Justice Cannings, Justice Tusais and Augerea’s appointments were made by the Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission on June 14.
Justice Cannings is an Australian who had been a human rights judge in the country for more than 15 years and had served in the National and Supreme Courts in Papua New Guinea.
Meanwhile, Justice Tusais appointment as a judge came after he was appointed as an acting judge in 2020.
He had been a lawyer for the last 30 years, as a defence lawyer and state prosecutor in the country.
