Judge hands 5yr jail terms to three men

THREE men will each serve five years in jail with hard labour for trying to rob another person in the National Capital District three years ago.
National Court Judge Nicholas Miviri, in Waigani last Tuesday, when sentencing the men, said the court was duty-bound to protect and maintain public peace.
And, a strong sentence must be given to those who resorted to violence and crime which have become normal in our society these days, Judge Miviri said.
“Strong and deterrent sentences must be imposed against those who see fit to defy and breach the law,” Judge Miviri said.
“Individual citizens will not throw this country to its knees because of greed and violence, as seen in this case.”
Abraham Karhamubu, 25, from Yangoru in East Sepik, Glen Wanire, 28, from Nawaeb in Morobe, and Angelo Ume, 23, from Kairuku in Central, pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery.
On Aug 12, 2021, at Waikele Market in Gerehu, NCD, while under the influence of alcohol, the three had smashed the glass of a vehicle belonging to one Terence Wokoason, with the intention of robbing him.
Wokoason was there to drop off his children.
After lecturing the three on the use of alcohol to settle problems, and using alcohol as an excuse to cause problems, the pain their actions would cause on the victim to fix the car, Judge Miviri then sentenced Karhamubu, Wanire, and Ume to five years each with hard labour.
He ordered that time spent in custody be deducted.
