CITY Hall spends more than K10 million per year on cleaning the city, says National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop.
He said the commission made a commitment to clean, protect and preserve the environment to commemorate World Environment Day.
“NCD Commission is serious in its commitment to making the city liveable, peaceful and active and also beautiful, healthy and clean through conducting awareness for action on this very important day in which the global community is asked to reaffirm its commitment to protect the country’s natural environment,” he said during a Cleanathon in the city on Saturday.
The Cleanathon attracted hundreds. They have joined governor, city manager Bernard Kipit and many stakeholders to do awareness on the significance of protecting the environment.
The United Nations-sanctioned World Environment Day is today.
The governor reiterated his call on the government to declare June 5 as a national day of action for all, including schools, to stop work to protect, preserve and clean the city.
“National city commission is keen on planning the next celebration with big bangs by way of planting trees to make Port Moresby a greener city,” Parkop said.
He asked city residents to look after the city themselves.
Kipit said the city was cleaned everyday but it went back to square one the next day.
“The only way is to change the attitude and behaviour of the city residents,” he said.
