Northern people living in Port Moresby have been urged to support new Telikom National Soccer League (NSL) franchise NC Civic Works Oro FC.
After a failed attempt last year, Ijivitari MP David Arore can now live his dream with Oro FC taking part in the semi-professional soccer competition.
“Yes, I can confirm that I wanted to put the team last year but it fell through but I am more than happy to support an initiative by Northern people in Port Moresby by committing K100,000 to the new franchise,” he said.
He said the NSL initiative had been endorsed by the provincial executive council headed by Governor Gary Juffa.
Arore, who is also the minister for higher education, said for far too long Northern people had been by-standers and it was time for them to actively participate in all forms of development, including sports.
Oro FC coordinator Dudley Yariyari thanked Arore for his timely support, which included K5,000 worth of
training equipment.
“Basically it’s about brand – Oro FC. We are trying things in a new direction to make way for Oro’s young generation of footballers,” he said.
Yariyari said his committee had assembled young technical staff to assist former national coach John Davani to train the players and name a 25-man squad by the end of this week.
He said they recruited former Eastern Star players Gary Moka, Fabian Bagi, Cyril Muta, Andrew Marampau, Abraham Enoch and Pascal Wojem who would form the core of the team.
Six local players from Higaturu Soccer Association would join the training squad this week.
