THE 2016 Bank South Pacific Men’s National Snooker titles cued off on a high note with a K20,000 sponsorship from its major sponsor.
The bank was pleased to continue its association with the PNG Billiard and Snooker Association as the naming rights sponsor of the men’s national snooker titles.
The National is a co-sponsor of the championship.
PNGBSA vice-president John Chan thanked the country’s largest bank for their continued support.
“BSP has been supporting the PNGBSA host this prestigious event on its annual calendar for the past 14 years.
“This support has contributed to the sport’s growth and development, in particular, the participation of young men and juniors around the country,” Chan said.
Presenting the cheque to PNGBSA, BSP NCD area manager, Stanerd Wai said: “We’re proud to be a part of an event which brings in players from around the country to participate in a competitive and socially-friendly environment.”
“Through this partnership, we have seen an increased recognition and participation at all levels throughout PNG,” He said.
Wai thanked the supporting sponsors, including the country’s leading daily, and wished all the players the best in the competition.
The minor (B grade) championship from September 7-11 will be followed by the major (A grade) championship from Sept 14-18.
Eight-time national snooker champion Djorne Fong has nominated to defend his title for the ninth consecutive year, while younger brother Monty will defend the minor title.
“Last year’s finals in the both the minor and major championships went down to the final frames and this year will be no exception, with more young talent and exciting snooker to be displayed,” Chan said.
He said a total of 40 players were expected to nominate for the major title and 48 for the minor title.
Chan thanked the management and staff of the venues — Aviat Club, Dragon’s Den and Q Club —for the use of their facilities during the national men’s titles.
