K275,000 market for Lae

A supermarket near Nadzab Airport outside Lae has built a K275,000 market to help local people sell their fresh produce.
TB&F Ltd managing director Jason Lin said that he felt for the vendors, especially women and girls selling fresh produce under makeshift shelters.
“There is no water and sanitation, no toilet, no shelter and the market is just near the highway,” he said.
Lin said basic human safety and hygiene was not in place as market workers went around collecting fees.
The sale of marijuana and homebrew was rampant.
“I negotiated with landowners and built the market for everyone to sell,” Lin said. “I offered to landowners (Orognaron clan) to manage.”
He said the market was part of the company’s community obligation and support for the landowners.
