THE Morobe government has budgeted K2 million for law and order this year under its commitment to support policing in the province, says an official.
Provincial administration Max Brutan said under the current chairmanship of Governor Luther Wenge, next year onwards the provincial government would look at possibilities of increasing the budget.
“We would like to see that law and order issues are manageable to give confidence to the business community and our citizens in the city as well as in rural areas.
“They must live without being intimidated or threatened,” Brutan said.
He made the statements during presentation of 10 cartons of field gear uniforms to the provincial police command in Lae yesterday.
“For the higher authorities, , it is our responsibility to ensure that police are supported in order to keep law and order issues down and that will give confidence to investors coming in to invest,” he said.
Bruton said at the moment, law and order issues were increasing all over the country and police had to be equipped well in order to tackle those issues
While mentioning this, Brutan thanked policemen and women from the two commands in Morobe for managing the crime rate in the province over the last six months.
“Because of your tireless efforts in managing crime, there has been no major crime reported and that is why the provincial administration will still support you where possible,” he said.
Despite the fact that law and order issues are rising at some parts, the police personnel there have managed to take control of the situations.
He said out of the K2 million that was budgeted for policing in the province this year, over K150,000 was used to purchase the uniforms for the police personnel in the province.
