PEOPLE living along the Koen to Kombal road in Mendi-Munihu, Southern Highlands, are in high spirits as the district development authority-funded K2 million road project is nearing completion.
Project supervisor for contractor BKC Ltd, Andrew Alep Kengi, told The National that the 5km road in the Karinz local level government along the source of Mendi River had less than a kilometre left to be completed.
He said since the project started earlier this year, locals were helpful in supporting the contractor.
“The authority under the leadership of MP and Works Minister Michael Nali has improved several feeder roads, most of them in a very poor state like the Koen-Kombal road,” he said.
“BKC managing director Peter Nupiri, who hails from Karinz understands the struggles people have been facing for many years and has given his best to construct a quality road.”
Kengi said BKC had been awarded three separate contracts, the K9.5 million Karel-Mogol-Komba road and K5 million Map-Bela-Komba road sealing counter funded by the Works Department and the current K2 million Koen-Kombal construction projects.
Mungra ward councillor Tekin Meraimb thanked the district authority for awarding the contract to BKC Ltd for a quality work.
Authority chief executive officer Pora Nema said to empower the rural people to partake in business activities, road infrastructure was crucial.
He said authority chairman Nali had increased investments in infrastructure to benefit subsistence farmers that would promote small to medium business activities, quick access to health facilities, education, markets and other services.
“A road link is vital as it will allow the people to enjoy the fruits of economic and social development,” he said.
