SINCE 2011, a total of K528 million has been received from development partners for the law and justice sector, a portion of which was allocated to addressing gender-based violence (GBV), says Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey. Ling-Stuckey told the parliamentary committee conducting an inquiry into GBV that the Government’s contribution was around K1 million per year. “This year, of the K1 million allocated, no money has been expended yet (for GBV cases),” he said. He said there were 11 social sector agencies working together on the GBV cases including the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Religion. Ling-Stuckey said he would keep in mind the proposal for a minimum of K10 million for GBV activities. Committee chairman Charles Abel requested at least K5 million a year to support a GBV secretariat. He requested another K5 million to strengthen the capacities of the police and public prosecutors in addressing GBV cases. Ling-Stuckey said he was willing to “take up any specific funding submissions that might come from the special parliamentary committee”.
