K7.5m for Ops: Manning

THE Government has allocated K7.5 million to police for security operations during the Bougainville Referendum, acting Police Commissioner David Manning says.
Manning said police were committed to a successful outcome of the referendum set to take place on Saturday.
It will see a total of 50 police personnel from around PNG being deployed to Bougainville to assist the Bougainville Police Service (BPS).
“The police personnel deployed to Bougainville are actually Bougainvilleans working in other parts of PNG or other Papua New Guineans with attachments to Bougainville through marriage,” Manning said.
He said due to the importance of the referendum, he had approved the deployment of a team from the Police Media Unit in September to Bougainville to assist the BPS with its awareness campaign. Manning said planning for security operations was a collaborative effort between the BPS and PNG police which resulted in a budget of K7.5 million put forward and approved by the PNG Government.
“The people of Bougainville will be asked to express their preferences between greater autonomy or independence. The Bougainville Referendum is important to the people of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and the Government of PNG and we will do our best to ensure that the people of Bougainville can peacefully, and without undue stress and influence, determine their own future political status,” Manning said.

  • A succeful Referendum will se t a brtighter future for the Bougainvillians.
Therefore the police personels must execute thier duties as instructed.

    • I hope so.. I would not be suprise AROB keeps running back to PNG after being politically independent for budgetary and other support.

      All the best Bougainvillians.

  • Bougainville must take the risk of getting Independence and as time goes by, they will gradually learn from their mistakes and error to move forward.
And I know that they Bougainvilleans will definitely advance with the type of mentality and attitude of respecting and humbling themselves wherever you see them. Also their mindset of hardworking is an advantage for Bougainvilleans.
May God richly bless Bougainvilleans and Bougainville.

  • I silently pray and hope that most vote for united PNG (greater autonomy) and together (as 1 nation) we work for economic independence instead.

  • PNG will always be in the win whether Bougainville gets independence in greater autonomy. If given the independence, PNG will be a bigger winner then being given a greater autonomy
