K75mil from fund set for climate-hit islands, atolls

THIRTY atolls and islands will benefit from K75 million from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to build climate change resilience projects to address current and future threats from climate-related hazards.
The projects aims to improve the capacities of vulnerable villages by engaging government agencies and civil society to plan and respond to the impacts of climate change.
Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) managing director Ruel Yamuna and National Agriculture Research Institute (Nari) director general Dr Sergie Bang signed a memorandum of agreement in Lae last Wednesday.
The five selected provinces are :

  • Manus: Lelemadih-Bupichupeu in Ahus, Andra and Ponam in Pomutu Ndrehet Kurti, Maso, Matahai, Salapai, Sisi-Paii in Bipi and Bisikani-Soparibeu;
  • East New Britain: Duke of York Island, Kerawara, Utuan, Mioko (Palpal and Virian) and Mualim;
  • Milne Bay – Samarai communities in Bwanabwana are Kwaraiwa and Ware, Murua (Budibudi, Yanaba and Egom on Wiakau Island), Kiriwina-Goodenough (Kaileuna (Kaisiga, Giva, Koma, Kaduwaga and Tawema), Kitava and Simsimla;
  • Morobe – Siassi Islands, Malai, Mandok and Aromot and Tami Islet, Finschhafen; and,
  • Autonomous Regions of Bougainville – Carterets (Tulun) including Han, Piul, Yangain, Yolasa and Yesila, Nukutoa in Mortlock (Takuu), Tasman, Amotu in Nukumanu, Busuria in Fead and Tinputz (Sauma, Hunamou and Woroav).
