THE K92 mine has supported the Kundiawa- Gembogl administration to assist hundreds of people affected by recent flooding and landslips over the weekend as they wait for the Government intervention, according to local MP Muguwa Dilu.
Continuous heavy rainfall triggered landslides, floods, and extensive damage to properties, infrastructures and sadly many loss of lives.
“The community is reeling from the aftermath of this natural disaster with numerous families displaced and in urgent need of assistance,” Dilu said.
Dilu said K500,000 would be made available soon and deposited to the CBL Hardware and Supermarket operating in Kundiawa to provide short-term assistance to the victims while waiting for Government’s (Works and Highways Department) intervention after visits were made to the affected areas on Sunday.
He also gave K50,000 to meet the victims’ immediate needs.
The K92 Mine in neighbouring Eastern Highlands also pledged another K250,000 for relief efforts for the affected communities.
“The widespread devastation underscores the imperative need for climate change adaptation and mitigation measures,” Dilu said.
Dilu said it was important to allocate sufficient funding for such initiatives in provincial and district budgets and highlighted the necessity of addressing both immediate relief efforts and long-term preventive measures.
According to district authority the Works Department will take the lead to rebuild three bridges at Mitnade local level government (LLG) area and two others at Angainere and Koconmabuno.
“As the community grapples with the aftermath of this unprecedented disaster, the imperative for government action on climate change adaptation and mitigation becomes increasingly urgent. Prioritising the safety and well-being of vulnerable communities and building resilience in the face of escalating natural disasters are essential objectives.”
Meanwhile, Dilu said the existing road connecting Gembogl station to Mondia-Pass would be upgraded under the Connect PNG Programme.
Dilu urged the provincial works department to speed up the process and commence work without delay.
