PERSONNEL Management Department secretary John Kali wants to see greater accountability by all public servants to ensure that public funds are properly managed.

He said the 2013 national budget saw a shift in financial management and accountability to provinces, districts and local level governments.

“Therefore prudent established guidelines must be followed by all public servants to ensure that the funds transferred to the sub-national levels of government are properly managed and tangible results are achieved.

“This will improve the delivery of services to the ordinary people.”

Kali said he was working closely with the secretary for the Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs Munare Uyassi to improve service delivery.

“Such an approach requires our political leaders, bureaucrats in Waigani, bureaucrats in the sub-national levels of government, private sector, NGOs, churches, donors and the public at large to work together through the provincial and local level services monitoring authority mechanism,” Kali said.

He said two workshops held in Goroka for the Highlands region and in Madang for Mamose were successful because clear strategies were proposed and agreed to by the provincial administrations and the national departments to work on.

A third workshop is scheduled for the New Guinea Islands region in Kokopo on May 7.
