PAPUA New Guinea’s sprint champion Leroy Kamau finished with a season’s best of 21.18 in the 200m heats despite finishing eighth in at the World Athletics Championships in Hungary yesterday.
Kamau, 24, started in lane six and was unable to repeat his personal best of 20.99 in race with World number one Noah Lyles.
American Lyles finished first in heat two with a time of 20.05 while Jamaican Andrew Hudson (20.25) and Czech Republic’s Ondrej Macík (20.40) earned qualification after finishing second and third respectively.
Athletics PNG president Tont Green commended Kamau for his effort in his first outing at a World Championships.
Green said Kamau had a nervous start but still maintained a competitive run during the heat.
“Yes it was a good solid run by Leroy,” said Green.
“Not a national record or a personal best but a very respectable run. He was a bit slow out of the blocks as he was conscious of false starting.
“This might sound odd for a Pacific islander but really hot conditions like this are not ideal for anyone.”
