Kapuls in tough pool

HEAD coach Marcos Gusmao says there is still more work to be done to prepare the national men’s team against some of the region’s football heavyweights.
But the Brazilian told The National yesterday that he was confident that his experience would hold his players in good stead.
His comments came after the team were placed in Group B along with New Zealand, New Caledonia and Fiji for the region’s Fifa World Cup qualifiers in Qatar from March 14-30.
“Looking at the recent past, I saw many defensive and offensive failures,” Gusmao said.
“Obviously, we need to work on them to face the teams in the group.
“I believe in my experience.
“My training methods are from the world of elite football.
“With a solid preparation and some friendly games, I believe the team will understand my way of playing.
“We do not choose opponents, but we will play firm and strong against any of them.” Papua New Guinea are one of eight teams who will be vying for one spot in the regional qualifiers.
The winner will represent Oceania in the intercontinental playoffs against the representative of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football next June for a World Cup spot.
When asked about his arrival, Gusmao said the PNG Football Association was liaising with the Immigration and Citizenship Authority to approve his visa which had been delayed due to the Coronavirus.
“My plans are very clear and concrete with world-class training to prepare the team well to earn a spot in the World Cup in Qatar,” he said.
“I believe in the group we have and with a focus on concentration, I’m sure we’ll make it.
“The group is difficult, but not impossible.”
Attempts to get a comment from the association on Gusmao’s visa were unsuccessful.
