PAPUA New Guinea men’s soccer team, Kapuls, want to thank the sold-out crowd for backing them during the OFC final against New Zealand All Whites on Saturday night.
Captain David Muta, pictured, and vice-captain Raymond Gunemba thanked all those who turned up at Sir John Guise Stadium and those who stayed glued to their TV sets at home.
Both said it was a disappointing result but it would help the Kapuls improve their game as they prepared for the World Cup qualifiers next year.
Striker Gunemba personally apologised for missing a penalty kick which could have forced the teams into extra shootout to decide the winner.
“I just want to say to all the supporters that I’m very sorry for missing the penalty kick and want to apologise to my parents who flew in from Lae to watch the final,” he said.
He thanked God for the blessings and for bringing the team this far to make history and for the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards he and skipper Muta won.
