THE Kukipi community at 6-Mile in Port Moresby will compete in volleyball games during the festive season, thanks to a commitment of K5000 from Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa, pictured.
Housing and Urbanisation Minister Kaupa made the commitment on Sunday after receiving a project proposal from the Kukipi Women’s Association.
“It is that time of the season in Port Moresby and around the country when people get together to celebrate Christmas through sports and other activities,” Kaupa told the association.
“I am therefore committing these funds for you to have your volleyball games.
“The games should not be restricted to a certain age group and gender but they must be inclusive of all members in the community, so long as one is physically fit to play.
“You have to organise yourselves and find a venue to host your games.
“My first secretary will work on the commitments and bring the funds next week to be handed to the groups that I have committed to in this community.”
Kaupa said involving people in sports was one of his priorities in order to help address law-and-order issues.
“We have to address lawlessness in our communities in the electorate, thus one positive way to do this is to engage youths in sports,” he said.
“Our youths are our future.
“We can’t allow them to fall back in the societies we live in and cause all sorts of social issues for us.
“Being a national leader, I will continue to support youth programmes in the electorate as long as I am your MP.”
One of the major initiatives of the MP is the John Kaupa Cup which involves rugby league and soccer matches being played at the Unagi Oval.
According to competition president Jeffery Bomai, the matches are into the third round.
