Keep pets off town streets: Police

WEWAK police in East Sepik are warning residents to keep their pets, especially dogs, off the streets in town or the animals will be shot.
Provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli issued the warning after observing a growing number of stray dogs roaming and scavenging for food in the streets.
“The dogs are roaming freely although many of the animals have owners.
The dogs are let loose everywhere.
“This is causing traffic disruption and inconveniencing road users and the public. It is a nuisance,” Beli said.
“Road accidents can happen when vehicle drivers try to avoid hitting the strays.
“Properties can be damaged, people can get themselves injured or even lose their life in a car accident,” he said, adding that some dogs even attacked passers-by.
Beli said such pets could also contribute to the spread of diseases.
“Take your pets and dogs off the streets or we will start shooting the animals,” he warned town residents. He also urged the town authorities and the council to look into and address the nuisance caused by stray animals.
“Dog owners must heed this warning and start taking steps to be responsible for their pets.
Public safety and convenience are the priority in this problem.
“Cooperate and work with us to ensure public convenience and safety for everyone in Wewak town,” he added.
