KEREMA Rugby League kicked off its 2021 season over the weekend with 14 teams across three divisions.
League executive Manza Feaviri told The National that it was relief to bring matches back to the town following the cancellation of the 2020 season due to Covid-19.
“We had a hard time getting teams and people together last season so we tried our best to make sure we run games this year and we’re happy to get the first round going,” he said.
“We had a good turnout from all the teams which includes 10 teams in the men’s division and Under-20s while our women’s category had only four teams.
“It’s a manageable number of teams, so we’re hoping to play 18 rounds before heading into the finals in September.
“Covid-19 was something that really impacted us last year and with the ongoing lockdown and restrictions in town and around the country, we weren’t able to go ahead with games.”
Feaviri said the new season was slow, however, he was confident that the competition would gain momentum with the first round completed.
