THE Kerema urban local level government is using a new system to print cheques to ensure transparency and accountability in its accounting process.

Located in the Gulf, it is the first local level government to use the Finance Department’s PAGAS system in the province.

The first cheques were printed at the treasury office in Kerema on Saturday May 18.

The conversion to the PAGAS system was made possible by IT manager Mathias Lucas from the Finance Department.

“It is important that other councils convert to the PAGAS system to avoid misuse of public funds,” Lucas said.

An official said there was a lot of uncontrolled expenditure and the previous use of a cheque book was subjected to abuse and misuse.

He said any money used by the LLG would be scrutinised by the public and the Finance Department who had access to the system.
