AIR Niugini will resume flights using jet aircraft to Aropa Airport in Kieta, Autonomous Region of Bougainville, from next Tuesday.
The company said in a statement this was made possible following the installation of solar panels supplying power to the precision path indicator lights on the runway.
The lights are a visual aid to pilots coming in to land. It is a requirement for jet operations.
“This is not the first time solar panels were stolen affecting flights into the area. Again, the National Airports Corporation has funded the installation of solar panels with the provincial government guaranteeing security at the airport.”
Air Niugini will operate flights to Kieta on Tuesday and Friday. Flight PX 262 on Tuesday will operate from Port Moresby, Kieta and Buka.
It changes the flight number before continuing to Hoskins and to Port Moresby.
PX 252 on Friday leaves Port Moresby for Hoskins and Buka, changes the flight number and returns to Kieta and Port Moresby.
Once the runway works at Tokua Airport, Rabaul, are complete by May, the Hoskins stopover on the above flights will revert to Rabaul.
