Killing in PNG too common, court told

MAGISTRATE Cosmas Bidar lamented yesterday that young men today like to argue, end up fighting and killing one another for no reason.
“Such killings are common these days among young men. They start arguments out of very little things, resort to fights and kill for no reason at all. So many have died this way,” he said
Bidar made the comments in a Waigani Committal Court after Simon Toule, 21, from Rigo’s Bula, Central, was charged with murdering Jeremiah Sibona Asi on March 31. Police prosecutor Senior Sgt Joseph Sangam told the court that Asi was killed in a fight that broke out between two groups of young men between 6pm and 7pm in the Tokarara Market, in Port Moresby.
“Asi was with his friends telling stories when Toule and his friends confronted them and an argument was sparked. Toule and his friends then started punching and kicking Asi who managed to pick himself up and fled,” he said.
“Toule and his friends then chased Asi who was then stabbed with a sharp object.”
Sangam asked the court for a month’s adjournment for police to investigate further, record statements from witnesses and to arrest other suspects.
Bidar adjourned the hearing to May 24.
