Kipit limits pets to two a family

THE National Capital District Commission will allow only two pets per residence and restrict them to cats and dogs only.
City manager Bernard Kipit, said the restriction was necessary to control an increase of stray animals on city streets.
“Further to this restriction, residents will be required to have their cats and dogs in their care registered with a tag for control purposes,” Kipit said.
He said city residents have been given 31 days from Wednesday this week to comply.
“NCDC is concerned that owners have been negligent in the proper care of domestic animals, resulting in the increased number of stray cats and dogs in the city,” Kipit said.
“Stray cats and dogs pose health and hygiene risk to city residents, further causing nuisance and disturbance to residents.
“Any domestic animal seen roaming the city will be impounded and confined or put down, depending on its condition.
“The National Capital District Commission is appealing to city residents to report any excess domestic animals within their premises or stray animals for collection.”
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) recently said it aimed to reduce the number of stray animals on the streets, mainly cats and dogs.
RSPCA president Michelle McGeorge, said earlier that animal population control was one of its strategies.
“The only way we can do that is through providing discount or free services to settlements to enable us to neuter their animals,” McGeorge said.
“That will hopefully manage our population so we don’t have all these animals on the streets.”
“It costs K400 to K500 per animal to do a free spay (sterilise) and neutering.”
