A SENIOR government officer with the Department of Implementation and Rural Development has praised Kiriwina-Goodenough in implementing its district services improvement programme (DSIP).
The department’s programme manager for Southern region, Aihi Vaki, said he was impressed with Kiriwina-Goodenough because all its DSIP funds had been left with the district administration.
He said the local MP did not have any say in how the funds were used.
Vaki said the district’s health, education, agriculture, infrastructure and water supplies and small scale fishery activities had been administered by the district administration and not the electoral office.
He said this was unlike many other districts in the country.
He commended the district administrator for being practical in ensuring the joint district planning and budget priorities committee (JDP and BPC) resolutions were implemented without delay.
“All sector coordinators are involved in screening and evaluating projects before approval is given by the JDP and BPC.
“They are then involved in implementing DSIP,” Vaki said.
He noted the good working relationship between the provincial administration, the two local level governments and the other districts.
“Generally the provincial administration is effective and supportive of the district administration to deliver basic government services,” he said.
Vaki said such work practices had resulted in the European Union funding the Kiriwina-Goodenough LLG chamber.
Negotiations are under way with Air Niugini to provide services to the two islands.
A housing scheme is being proposed for the islands.
Many people are in support of the district’s DSIP and want it continued.
