THE Port Moresby AFL season gets underway at the Colts Oval tomorrow with eight clubs vying for the EsiLoan-sponsored shield in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
The eight clubs are Koboni, Dockers, West, Cats, Gordon Kokofas, North Waigani Tigers, Gereka Bombers and Gerehu Magpies.
All clubs will field teams in the men’s senior and reserve grades with Koboni, Dockers, Kokofas, Tigers and Magpies the only clubs with women’s teams.
The match of the round sees reigning premiers Concept Koboni take on the Cats in tomorrow’s main match at 3pm.
It will be a tough task for the Cats but they are capable of causing problems for Koboni in the season opener.
There is plenty of talent in the Cats camp and under the coaching of Australian Colin Spencer the club could have a few tricks up their sleeves.
Koboni are still favoured to bank a win if their pre-season form is anything to go by – they finished second best for a runners-up trophy.
The key factor that makes the Demons unbeatable is their great team spirit and resolve to overcome any obstacle.
Their premiership winning form last season was superb.
They made it from fifth spot on the ladder to win the title.
In the curtainraiser tomorrow, the Lamana Dockers should unleash their considerable firepower against North Waigani Tigers. In the main match on Sunday, the re-admitted Gerehu Magpies can expect a baptism of fire from Gordon Kokofas.
In the earlier match on Sunday, last year’s preliminary finalists, West Eagles should have too much experience and speed for the Gereka Bombers.
